Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
78 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 24th September 1946, Private George York, referred to as Yorkey, 56th Battalion (Reg No- 586A), ship's fireman from Young Street, Carrington, New South Wales and Garrett Street, Carrington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. METHODIST 4-20. 51.
Born at West Hartlepool, Durham, England about 1881 to George and Annie York; husband of Margaret Ann York nee Todd, married 22.6.1918, Wickham, N.S.W., died 18.12.1945, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 72, sleeping here, Yorkey enlisted on the 20th November 1915 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Admitted to hospital 2.3.1917 (influenza).
Yorkey arrived home invalided on the 7th June 1918, being discharged medically unfit (chronic rheumatism) on the 6th August 1918.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, marriage, etc.
Mr. York’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates and the Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor.
I have placed poppies at Yorkey’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
