William was only 17 years old when he was killed. His family epitaph reads-  IN THE FIELD OF BATTLE, HE BRAVELY TOOK HIS PLACE, HE FOUGHT AND DIED FOR AUSTRALIA, AND THE HONOUR OF HIS RACE, SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE HE IS LYING, SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE HE FELL, FAR AWAY FROM THE SHORES OF AUSTRALIA, AND THE ONES WHO LOVED HIM WELL.
