John James Leipold was born at Boots Gully, Daylesford, Victoria on 25th August, 1892 (date from sources on Ancestry) to parents George Frederick & Elizabeth Leipold (nee Thompson). (John James attested with the Australian Imperial Force on 31st August, 1915 (another form has date of enlistment as 21st August, 1915) giving his age as 22 years & 11 months).
George Frederick Leipold, father of John James Leipold, died on 27th October, 1915 in Leonora Hospital from an accident at Niagara Mine, Kookynie, Western Australia.
On 31st August, 1915 John James Leipold enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as a 23 year old, single, Miner from Leonora, Western Australia.
He was posted to 27th Depot on 31st August, 1915 for recruit training.
Private Leipold was admitted to Blackboy Hill Hospital from 15th to 23rd September, 1915 with Influenza. He was transferred to “A” Company, No. 3 Depot Battalion on 27th September, 1915. Private Leipold was transferred to 7th Reinforcements of 28th Battalion on 1st November, 1915.
He was written up on 15th November, 1915 while posted at Blackboy Hill Camp – overstaying leave from 12th November, 1915 to 9.30 am on 15th November, 1915. He forfeited 3 days’ pay & was fined £1.
Private John James Leipold, Service number 3176, embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on HMAT Medic (A7) on 18th January, 1916 with the 7th Infantry Brigade, 28th Infantry Battalion, 7th Reinforcements & disembarked at Alexandria on 16th February, 1916.
On 21st March, 1916 Private Leipold embarked for Overseas per H. T. Oriana from Alexandria & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 27th March, 1916.
He was taken on strength of 28th Battalion in France on 3rd May, 1916.
Private John James Leipold was wounded in action in France on 29th July, 1916. He was admitted to 57th Field Ambulance on 29th July, 1916 with shrapnel wounds & fractured right shoulder. Private Leipold was transferred & admitted to No. 34 Casualty Clearing Station on 29th July, 1916 with gunshot wounds to arm then transferred on 30th July, 1916 to No. 16 Ambulance Train. He was admitted to No.11 Stationary Hospital at Rouen on 30th July, 1916 with gunshot wounds to arm. Private Leipold embarked on Hospital Ship Aberdonian from Rouen, France on 1st August, 1916 with gunshot wounds to right shoulder.
On 2nd August, 1916 Private Leipold was admitted to 3rd Western General Hospital, Cardiff, Wales with gunshot wounds to right shoulder – severe. His condition was listed as dangerous.
Private John James Leipold died on 3rd August, 1916 at 3rd Western General Hospital, Cardiff, Wales from wounds received in action in France – gunshot wounds to right shoulder.
He was buried in Cathays Cemetery, Cardiff, Wales.
