The death occurred at the Family Hotel, at Gordonvale, in tragically sudden circumstances at 1.30 a.m., yesterday, of Mr. Edward Downey, aged 36 years, son of Mrs. Downey of Edmonton, late A.I.F., and an original Anzac at the landing on
Gallipoli. Deceased had been in failing health for the last six months, as a result of his war wounds and disabilities, which, included severe gas poisoning on the Wester Front.
The late Mr. Downey was born at Cooktown. The funeral, moved from the R.C Church, Gordonvale, at 4 o'clock, on Friday afternoon and was very well attended. The members of the R.S.S.I.L.A. were well represented, and the same, body also acted as pall bearer's. The Casket was draped with the flag for which he so gallantly fought. The Rev Father Carr conducted the service at the Church, and also the last sad rites at the Gordonvale Cemetery.
The floral tributes were numerous and were from the following:
