William Arthur Brown was born in 1882 in Ipswich, Suffolk England, just east of Cambridge. When William was 32 years old, he enlisted on the 12th January 1915 in Oaklands. Adelaide. William’s initial rank in the army was as a Private.
He embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 2 June 1915.
After training with the 11th Light Horse Regiment, William transferred to the 9th Light Horse Regiment on August 29th, 1915. He remained and served with the 9th regiment for 6 months in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign. Then, on the 22nd February 1916, William transferred back to the 11th Light Horse Regiment.
On the 1 Sep 1916, William transferred to the Imperial Camel Corps which served in Gaza and Beersheba in Palestine. After serving there for two years, on the 23 Mar 1918, William was promoted to Corporal in Australian Provost Corps (3 ANZAC Battalion) and served in Egypt. On the 11 Nov 1918, William was promoted to Sergeant in the Australian Provost Corps.
On 27th October 1919, he was discharged from the AIF. 3 months later, on the 12 January 1920, William was honoured with Mention in Dispatches by General Allenby for his brave services in Egypt and Palestine.
William died on Saturday, the 10th of June 1961 at the age of 79 years. William was buried with his wife Ethel Brown who had died 2 years prior.
