Upon recovering and undergoing additional training he left Australia with his unit on board HMAT RMS A7 Medic on 12 January 1916. While serving in Egypt he was admitted to hospital at Tel –el – Kebir with diarrhoea on 13 May. His condition deteriorated to the extent that Robert was hospitalised at Heliopolis with general debility on 24 May, and chronic rheumatism on 28 July.
Robert was mentioned in despatches in the London Gazette No.30233, Certificate No. 2048 of 10 August 1920. Continuing poor health, particularly rheumatism led to him being classified as medically unfit. Consequently, Robert returned to Australia on the Borda on 16 September 1916 and was discharged on 17 December.
