Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

8005 Samuel Gordon (Gordon) Spittle was born in Creswick North, Victoria, on 1891 to Samuel Spittle and Henrietta (Richards) Spittle. He was a 23-year-old, single, farmer when he enlisted in Ballarat on 17 July 1915. He had no previous military experience. He commenced his training on 12 August and was selected by Captain Brazenor of 18 Company AASC to be a driver. Gordon embarked on 8 November, arriving in Egypt on 12 December where he was put into hospital with Ptomaine poisoning.

In early 1916 Gordon spent ten weeks as a Lance Corporal but reverted to the ranks at his own request. Gordon arrived in France on 24 June 1916 and remained with 18 Coy AASC in France and Belgium for the rest of the war. He was awarded a Military Medal for his actions during September 1918. Gordon embarked for his return to Australia on 8 May 1919, disembarked in Melbourne on 23 June and was discharged on 15 August 1919 at the Termination of his Period of Enlistment (TPE).
