69 years ago today, on the 20th June 1953, Lance Sergeant Neil Robert Sutherland, 35th Battalion (Reg No-2405), clerk from 90 Laman Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and 32 Turner Street, Lambton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. METHODIST 4-23. 14.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 13th May 1897 to William Swanson and Annie Elizabeth Sutherland nee Sessions; husband of Gladys Sutherland nee Turner (married 1927, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1965, sleeping here), Neil enlisted May 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Neil returned home August 1919, being discharged on the 18th September 1919.
Mr. Sutherland’s name has been inscribed on the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Newcastle) Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at the gravesite in remembrance of Neil’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Older brother William Alexander (Original Anzac, Reg No-40, 1st Australian Field Company Engineers, born 1893, died 27.12.1980, district unknown, name inscribed on the Newcastle Protestant Alliance, Friendly Society of Australia, Lodge No-7 Roll of Honor) also served 1st A.I.F.
