On the 12th October 1969, Private John Thomas Munton, 56th Battalion (Reg No-843), labourer from Allandale Road, Cessnock, New South Wales and Raymond Terrace, N.S.W., died age 72 years 2 months. Laid to rest at Nelson Bay Cemetery, N.S.W., burial date unknown.

Born at East Maitland or Buchanan, New South Wales on the 6th August 1897 to John Thomas, died 3.5.1899, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 31, no funeral or death notice located, place of burial unknown, and Emily Jane Munton nee Bruton, re-married as Woods, died tragically 1.2.1934, Kurri Kurri District Hospital, N.S.W., age 60, sleeping at Cessnock Cemetery, N.S.W., from Newtown, Minmi, New South Wales and Wollombi Road, Bellbird, N.S.W.; husband of Gladys Hazel nee Tarrant, married 1927, Stockton, N.S.W., died 23.8.1979, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 71, sleeping with John at Nelson Bay Cemetery, N.S.W.

John enlisted on the 10th January 1916 with the 34th Battalion, age 18 years 5 months, at Cessnock, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.

Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 30.9.1916.

Granted leave to England from 6.3.1918 to 25.3.1918 and 2.2.1919 to 21.2.1919.

Transferred to 56th Battalion 11.10.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 23.8.1919.

Not officially commemorated.

I would like to see poppies placed at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
