Francis was born as Eli Cromwell BUGBY on 2nd November, 1892 at Bowden, Sherborne, England

His parents were Charles BUGBY & Hannah CLARKE

He was bound (took out an indenture) on the 8th August, 1908 for 4 years as a Mercant Seaman in Sunderland, England and in 1911 he was training at Holy Trinity & St Mary, Yorkshire (East Riding) registration district of Hull & gained his 2nd mate certificate in 1912 & his 1st mate certificate in 1914

He arrived in Sydney in 1914 from London on the ship Borda where he was listed as a Ships Officer - his father back in England was a Master Mariner

He married Brigid (Dell) LEE on 17th October, 1914 in St Francis Church, Paddington, Sydney and had one known child, Frances T (Tom) born in 1915

He enlisted on 1st August, 1916 in the 117 Howitzer Brigade and embarked from Sydney on HMAT Aeneas on 30th September, 1916

Francis was wounded in action on 21st July, 1917 with a gun shot wound to his knee &  forearm and was gassed on 26th July, 1917 & taken to 3rd London General Hospital

He returned to Australia on 23rd March, 1919 & was discharged on 1st August, 1919

He was suffering from shell shock & worrying about getting a job after returning from the war when sadly he committed suicide by hanging on 21st June, 1920 - he is buried in Waverley General Cemetery
