Served during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

83 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 30th November 1940, Private Arthur Ernest Dowd, Special Service Unit (Reg Nos- 59 & 85696), labourer from Broadmeadow Camp, Newcastle, New South Wales and Richardson Park, Hamilton North, N.S.W. (1936) and 175 King Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. CATHOLIC 2-61. 79.

Not married.

Born at Maryvale, New South Wales on the 3rd April 1877? to John and Catherine Dowd nee Crane, Arthur enlisted on the 30th December 1915 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Transferred to 54th Battalion 17.10.1916.

Admitted to hospital 27.1.1917 (GSW left foot, accidental?).

Reenlisted-14.5.1919, Holsworthy, N.S.W.

Arthur had returned home on the 3rd January 1918 and the 24th October 1919, being discharged on the 7th November 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

I have not located Mr. Dowd’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at David’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.
