Son of John and Maria Josephine Lawton of Cork Street, Winton, QLD
John was charged with Cowardice on 27 September 1917 and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment, but was released on 14 November 1917 and the charge was officially quashed 6 February 1918. His elderly mother was distressed with the rumours circulating in Winton of her son's sentence. His letters to his mother and sister indicated a cheerful optimism.
He was hospitalised with bronchitis and pneumonia in March 1918, but returned to France where he was missing in action and then reported killed in action 10 June 1918.
