Biography

Thomas Henry (Harry) Payne enlisted on 19 Feb 1916, with his brother Jack, part of the 5th Batallion, 17th Re-inforcements.  He had served for 5 months in the Australian Light Horse. He embarked with his brother on 4 Apr 1916 on HMAT Euripides.

He was wounded on 10 Feb 1917, and on 26 Feb 1917 received a neck and eye injury (he lost the sight of one eye).

He returned to Australia on 16 Jan 1918.

Harry was the eldest son of Thomas and Mary Ann Payne, and was my mother's cousin.

Tom was born 1894 in Wandin Yallock, to parents Thomas Payne and Mary Ann Gowling. He had 6 brothers and sisters- William 1895-9172, John Frederick 1897- 1918 France, Elizabeth Rose 1901-1901, George 1902-1911,Mary Ellen 1902- 1969 and Alfred 1908- 1909, all buried at Lilydale with the exception of John who died in WW1.

Tom and John enlisted together 1916 and both sailed together on board HMAT Euripides. Tom was a farmer in Seville until after 1954, he never married and was a member of Lilydale RSL. He died in Parkville 1963 January 1, aged 68 years and was buried at Lilydale Cemetery.
