Son of Oscar Van Assche and Ethel Van Assche nee Holroyd of Alma Road, East St Kilda, Victoria. Brother of Henry Van Assche who returned to Australia on 22 May 1918 having served with the 39th Battalion.
Prior to enlisting he was being employed by Brown & Durran Pty. Ltd. of Queen Street, Melbourne
Commenced return to Australia on 9 February 1919 aboard HT Ascanius disembarking on 3 April 1919
