Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
87 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 6th September 1936, Private George Reid, Australian Army Medical Corps (Nursing Staff, Reg No-20288), bricklayer from 46 off Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and Cessnock, N.S.W. and Aberdare Street, Aberdare, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 49. PRESBYTERIAN-15SE. 104.
Born at Broxburn, Scotland about 1887 to George and Rachel Reid; husband of Elizabeth Vaughan Reid nee Powell (married 23.3.1921, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1968 as EVANS), George enlisted on the 16th July 1917 with the Field Company Engineers, September 1917 Reinforcements at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A71 Nestor on the 21st November 1917.
No wounds during service.
George returned home on the 7th February 1920, being discharged on the 17th March 1920.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.
Mr. Reid’s name has been inscribed on the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Newcastle) Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at George’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
