Herbert Thomas Dryden, or Bert as he was known, enlisted in March 1916 aged 22 , stating that he was a market gardener from South Yarra. He embarked from Melbourne in June 1916 and entered France in November of that year.
On 7 June 1917 Bert was wounded in action with a gun shot wound to his thigh, likely at Messines, and was admitted to hospital in England for 2 months. He returned to his Battalion in France and served with them until he was killed in action in August 1918 during the attack on the village at Proyart.
His death was tragic. During an attack he was a with a group from his Battalion who were away from the immediate line of fire. He heard an explosion and stood up to observe what had happened and was struck with a piece of shrapnel in the head or neck, falling back onto his friend and dying immediately.
