Son of Frederick George Umhauer and Christina Umhauer nee Munro of Pakenham, Victoria formerly of Bendigo, Victoria. Brother of Reginald Arthur Umhauer who returned to Australia on 11 June 1919 having served with the Dental Detials.

Served a five year apprenticeship with Bendigo Electrical Supply Co.

Commenced return to Australia on 22 August 1919 aboard HT Anchises disembarking on 8 October 1919
