John was the eldest of three children of Jacob Dickinson (born 1839 in Lincolnshire, England) and Mary Ann O'Connell (born 1840 in Scotland). Jacob was in the British Army (Private, Regimental No: 1528) with the 55th Foot when he married Mary in County Cork, Ireland in 1861. He was then posted to India, where his three children were born, before being Discharged in 1877 and bringing his family to Brisbane, QLD.

John had worked as a Fireman in Brisbane and Nambour, and in 1890 married Annie Sexton in Brisbane, QLD. When he enlisted in the AIF in 1915, John was a Carpenter in Sandgate, QLD and father of four children (son John Sexton had died in 1902). John served with 8th Reinforcements 25th Infantry Battalion as a Private (Service No: 3491) in France. He was Discharged on medical grounds in January 1916 and returned to Sandgate in QLD where he was working as a Carpenter when he died in July 1917. Annie died in 1945.

Younger brother Jacob also served in WWI as a Private (Service No: 4061) with 11th Reinforcements 14th Pioneer Battalion. Son-in-LawDavid George Haynes served in WWI as a Sapper (Service no: 7325/Q1431) with 3/4 Pioneer Battalion Mining Corps.
