Thomas, John Richard Glanville, was born in Snowtown, South Australia on June 1884. He then joined the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and went to fight in Europe. After arriving in England in September 1916 he was soon diagnosed as not fit enough to fight. In May 1917 he was returned to Australia for medical discharge.
