James Edward Merrifield was born in St Peters, South Australia. His mother's name was Sarah Merrifield. Before the war, James worked as a fruiterer. 

James lived in St Peters, which is about 4 kilometres east of Adelaide CBD. James enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 25 July 1916. He joined the 48th Australian Infantry Battalion. He left Adelaide on 28 August 1916, on the ship HMAT A68 Anchises.

James returned to Australia on 19 June 1919, marking the end of his war service.
