From François Berthout

Today, I would like to pay a very respectful tribute to one of my boys who rest in peace here, under the peaceful sun of the Somme, I would like, with deep gratitude, with love and respect pay tribute to the Private number 4104 John Moffatt Foots who fought in the 22nd Australian Infantry Battalion and who was killed in action 102 years ago, April 23, 1918 at the age of 26🌺

John Moffatt Foots was born in 1891 in Jamieson, Victoria, Australia and was the son of James and Elizabeth Foots and lived in Rivers View, Jamieson, Victoria. Before the war John worked as a miner

Enlisted on January 11, 1916 in the 22nd Australian Infantry Battalion, he embarked with his unit from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on March 7, 1916 and sailed to Suez, Egypt where he arrived on April 10, 1916 and where he received his training and embarked from Alexandria, Egypt, May 9, 1916. Disembarked in Marseilles, France, May 18, 1916, he joined his battalion on the Somme front on July 31, 1916. The following month he was wounded in the chest and was evacuated to England and was treated in Weymouth.

John left to join his battalion in the Somme on October 10, 1917, unfortunately, he was wounded a second time on April 23, 1918 and was evacuated to Vignacourt, Somme, where he died of his wounds.

Today, John Moffatt Foots rests in peace at Vignacourt British Cemetery, Somme.

Thank you John, today we are all gathered around you to thank you with gratitude and humility for all that you have done for us, you who came from Australia to fight for your comrades and for France, on the lands of the Somme which are today peaceful and silent, we do not forget what you went through to offer us a world in peace, you who fought in a world and in a landscape bruised by war. we will always remember you always with honor and respect. You gave your life to give us a better world and this is the legacy that we must protect. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember him, we will remember them🌺
