Samuel Robert White was born in Tullinearly, Castleblayney, County Monaghan on 17 September 1880 to Samuel White and Mary Jane White (née Hamilton). Serving as an apprentice draper with David Boyd in Castleblayney town for four and a half years, White emigrated to Melbourne, Australia around 1902. With the outbreak of the war, White attempted to enlist; however, he was refused on the grounds of varicose veins. He was successful on his next attempt in May 1915.
