My grandfather returned to his place of birth in the Snowy Mountains NSW where he named his property Passchendaele, where he fought and lost many friends and was almost killed. In his breast pocket was a silver cigarette case and rosary beads. The bullet chipped the cross, jerked through the case and saved him being shot in the heart. He married Laura (ninty) and they raised four children, two sons and two daughters. He died in 1969 on his property. For his entire life he gave very generously always to The Red Cross and the Salvation Army, both looked after him on the front line, he never hesitated to part with thousands of pounds each year for them.
