Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Martin Costello was born around 1877 in Sligo, Ireland, a son to Thomas Costello and Mary Costello (nee Davey). He emigrated to Australia in 1896.

Martin Costello served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 129 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 899 in the 25th Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1. After embarking from Brisbane for WW1 it was discovered he was suffering from Tuberculosis and he was returned and discharged as medically unfit before entering active service.

Upon discharge he was sent to the Dalby Junilee Sanatorium to recuperate but passed away 13 Apr 1916. It appears after his Boer War service he returned to the United Kingdom and worked in the mines. He met and married Clara Dearden and returned to Australia where they had two chikdren.
