Allan joined the 9th Light Horse and embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A73 Commonwealth on 2 November 1917. Upon arriving in Egypt he was stationed at the Australian reinforcements Camp at Moascar. Allan was treated for synovitis at 31 General Hospital on 3 February 1918. On 6 April he was admitted to 2nd Australian Stationary Hospital with cellulitis due to being knocked by a horse while dismounting. This led to hospitalisation at Moascar and Port Said until late June. Allan left Suez on the Ceramic on 9 February 1919 and was discharged on 6 April.
