William Hamilton 1894 - 1962
William Hamilton was born on 21 February 1894 at Ivanhoe in Melbourne.
He served in World War 1 with 9th Lighthorse AIF, as a Lance Corporal No 419, in Egypt, Gallipoli and Palestine. He enlisted on 19 September 1914 at Broadmeadows. He was discharged on 21 November 1918 being medically unfit, to his intended place of residence, Newbridge on Loddon.
His WW1 service history...........He embarked at Melbourne on board the ship "Karroo" on 11 February 1915, aged 21 years, en route to Egypt landing there on 15 March 1915. He left for action on 15 May 1915 and received a gun shot wound to the abdomen on 30 May 1915 at Dardanelles in Gallipoli. On 28 August 1915 he was transferred to Zeitoun in Egypt for light duties with 3rd Light Horse Regiment. On the 26 May 1917 he was transferred to 9th Light Horse Regiment at Moascar. On 25 February 1918 he was sent to rest camp at Port Said. On 10 March 1918 he returned to his unit. On the 4 May 1918 he was appointed Lance Corporal. On 22 June 1918 he reverts at own request. On 12 July 1918 he embarked HT Pt Darwin at Suez for Australia.
William Hamilton worked as a Farm Labourer on a station called "Lagoona" at Janiember (now Bear's Lagoon) before and after he returned from WW 1. When he was married in 1923 to Fanny Doody from Inglewood he was living at Newbridge. In 1925, they moved to a "closer settlement " property (378 acres 1 rood 33 perches) at East Shelbourne. Now in 2004 the old red brick house they lived in and the old blacksmiths shed are still standing in Junor Road, East Shelbourne. (The thatched roof sheds have gone.) He died in 1962 aged 67 years at home on the farm at East Shelbourne.
His WW2 service history..........He farmed at Shelbourne until World War 2, when he enlisted again on 5 August 1941 and served as a private V18174 in the role of a guard at the German Prisoner of War camp "Dhuringile" Murchison until his discharge on 19 October 1945. Fanny and the family kept the farm working while he was away.
