Duncan William Allan Campbell was one of three sons of John and Maria Campbell of Footscray, Victoria who served with the AIF during WW1. Duncan was the only one returned to Australia.
His older brother, 175 Pte. Hugh Campbell 14th Battalion AIF, was an original Anzac and had gone right through the Gallipoli campaign. He was killed in action at Pozieres on 12 August 1916, aged 28.
Another older brother, 6476 Lce. Cpl. Frederick Aedy, M.M. 5th Battalion AIF, was later killed in action at Broodseinde on 4 October, 1917, aged 23.
Duncan joined the 37th Battalion on the Western Front during January 1917. He was wounded in action at Messines during June 1917, diagnosed with severe ‘shell shock’. He was evacuated to England and was returned to Australia within a few months.
