CLEMENT WALLINGTON HARRIS was born at Wermatong Station, Tumut, New South Wales, on 17th July, 1891, the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Harris. He was educated at King’s College, Goulburn, where he spent five years.
He joined the Bank’s service at Gundagai on 14th July, 1908; was promoted to ledger-keeper in July, 1911; and transferred to Grenfell in April, 1912; thence to Coolamon, New South Wales, in August, 1913.
Clement Harris enlisted as a trooper in the 1st Light Horse Regiment on 18th August, 1914, and was promoted to lancecorporal on 30th September. He went to Egypt and thence to Gallipoli, where he was promoted to corporal in May, 1915, and to sergeant in August, 1915, and won his commission as secondlieutenant in the following November. He was transferred to Sinai and promoted to lieutenant on 14th April, 1916. In the following July he joined the 1st Australian Machine Gun Squadron, and fought in the second battle of Gaza, in April, 1917, being mentioned in despatches for gallantry in the field and devotion to duty. He was wounded in action at Rafa on 9th January, 1917, and at Beersheba on 3rd November, 1917.
In the following January he was appointed captain and transferred to the 2nd Australian Machine Gun Squadron, with which he served until the Armistice.
