Adelaide with his unit on board A 68 Anchises on 28 August 1916 and was sent
to France on 3 December, where he was appointed Lance Corporal on 17
January 1917. On 24 June he became a Driver with his unit. He was awarded
the Military Medal on 31 October the details of which were contained in the
Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No.76 of 23 May 1918 as follows:
“Westhoek- Zonnebeke {Belgium} 4 -9 October 1917 this NCO was in charge of
a group of pack animals on five different occasions. On each occasion the
ground through which he had to pass was under very heavy shell fire. He
displayed the utmost coolness and courage, and kept the work going without
intermission. His efforts and example undoubtedly contributed in no small
17
degree to the safe arrival of large quantities of ammunition and stores in the
forward area.
On one occasion he worked for five consecutive hours under very heavy shell
fire between an Anzac House and Zonnebeke Cemetery providing ammunition
at that time being very badly needed. Signed N.M. Smyth Major General
Commanding 2nd Australian Division 14 October 1917.”
Sydney was hospitalised for six weeks in France with tumiles on 28 October,
rejoining his unit on 15 December. He returned to Australia on the Chemniz on
7 July 1919 and was discharged on 15 October. After the war Sydney resided
at Snowtown where his War Medal was sent to him on 7 March 1922.
