Two brothers killed in action also three cousins from S.A.

Clifford Stary Nation was a Private who served in the 10th Battalion from 1916 to late 1917. Clifford was Born in 1889 in the suburb of Magill which is located in South Australia. Clifford had two brothers who fought in the war whose names were Ralph and Eric Nation. These three brothers were all killed within the space of five months. Clifford was the oldest of the brothers who was aged 28 at the time of his death.

Clifford Nation enlisted for the army on the 6th of September, 1915 at the age of 26. At the time of his enlistment he was 5 foot 6 inches tall and he weighed 138lbs. When he enlisted Clifford was single however his girlfirend fell pregnant just before he left. This was a controversy because according to his service records his family were not aware of this child born out of wedlock. At the time of this event happening this situation was known as a 'bastard child'. Clifford listed his mother as his next of kin but upon the birth of his son he changed this. This meant that upon his death his army pension and medals would go to his young son and his girlfriend a Florence Harry. According to the Army service records his father contested this arrangement and the medals and memorial scrolls were split between these two families.

On the 7th of Febuary 1916, Clifford Nation embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A28 Miltiades. Clifford served with the 10th battalion on the Western Front.

Clifford was wounded in France in a field located on the outside of France on the 18/5/17 and was hospitalised. After Clifford made his recovery he returned to active service in the war of "The Third Yrpes" untill he was wounded again, however this time he went missing, this occured on the 23/6/17. Clifford Nation was announced dead on the 12th of December in 1917. Clifford was killed in action in the fields of Bullecourt in France.

Clifford Starry Nation is buried in the Queant Road Cemetery (Plot v1, Row C, Grave number 21) Buissy, France.
