After the War
After WW I Ernest was initially employed as a hospital attendant. At 6 foot tall, and being a returned serviceman, he was eminently qualified in those post-war days for entry into the South Australian Police Force, which he joined on 1 Dec 1923 as a probationary foot constable in Adelaide.
Issued the I/D No. 304, he served as a foot constable at Adelaide (1923-1931) and at suburban Richmond Police Station (1932-1945). After the war he was a Traffic Control foot constable in the city of Adelaide until his retirement on 30 June 1954. Traffic Control section worked the city intersections before the installation of traffic lights.
His mostly unremarkable police career included a temporary appointment as a plain clothes constable in 1927, which was curtailed by a punishment for allowing a prisoner to escape. This was atoned for in 1930 by his being awarded an honourable mention.
