Edward was born in Townsville on 29 Dec 1887, son of Edward Ashton and Ellen Mary Day.
Lance Corporal Ashton enlisted in Townsville on 1 Jul 1916 and embarked from Brisbane per HMAT A48 “Boonah” on 21 Oct 1916. He served on the Western Front with the 41st Battalion AIF.
He returned to Australia on 12 Jun 1919 and was discharged on 19 Sep 1919.
He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field on 8 Feb 1918.
He married Isabella Masson Emslie on 26 Aug 1930. He died on 19 Aug 1955.He was a grocer.
