Biography contributed by Andreena Hockley

"Corporal Bert. Jones, killed in action in France, was the son of Mr. William Jones, of 106 Lygon-street, East Brunswick.

He was born in 1893, and received his early education at the Prince's Hill School and the Melbourne High School. In 1910, he became junior teacher at School 2743, South Brunswick, and, in 1912, was transferred to No. 2837, Moreland. Afterwards, he was head teacher at Nos. 1857, Nanneella; 1058, Wodonga West; 1589, Invermichie; and 2191, Bonn. He showed himself a methodical, painstaking, and hard-working teacher.

He enlisted in February, 1916, and was sent to the Seymour Camp, where he was made a Corporal.

He was transferred to Geelong with the rank of Sergeant, sailed for England in August, and arrived in France early in November. Although offered safe clerical positions, he preferred to be in the firing line, where he met his death on the 23rd of April, 1917."
