"THE LATE PRIVATE C. E. SMEDMAN.

Private C E. Smedman, reported killed in action in France on August 4, wan the second son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Smed man, of Iodide-street, Broken Hill. Private Smedman was 22 years of age, and a native of Wilcannia. He came with his parents to Broken Hill, when only a child. He was educated at the Broken Hill district and convent schools. After leaving school he worked at the tool shop in the Broken Hill North Mine, and after some time he left there and worked at the British mine mill until the war broke out. He served in the Citizen Forces of the Commonwealth for three years, and then enlisted for the A.I.F., and was accepted on March 11, 1915. He sailed for the front on August 26. After spending six months with his battalion in Egypt and Lemnos Is land, he left for France, and was wounded on June 6 while carrying a comrade (the late Lance-Corporal C. B. Lewis). Private Smedman was greatly esteemed by a large circle of friends, who mourn his early death." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 30 Dec 1916 (nla.gov.au)
