Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Colin Grant Meudell had enlisted in the 4th Field Artillery Brigade, AIF and served in France until November 1916. He was killed on active service on the 10 August 1917 in France after joining the Royal Flying Corps on 16 March 1917. 2nd Lt. Meudell’s aircraft was brought down when a looping aircraft crashed into his machine. His observer, Airman Arthur Lawson was also killed in the Sopwith 1½ Strutter from No 43 Squadron RFC. Both are buried in the Lapugnoy Cemetery, France. Colin Meudell was 24 years old, from Kew in Victoria and was educated at Trinity Grammar School. He too was a member of the Melbourne Cricket Club. His father, William Grant Meudell was a well-known Melbourne accountant. In a memorial notice published in the Melbourne Argus, someone inserted the message “The star of duty shed its ray, to show our boy, the Empire's way.” His parents both died just before the war and his next of kin was his only brother, William Grant Meudell. William also served throughout the war with the 7th Field Artillery Brigade AIF.
