Private Robert Vance Caldwell was 21 years and 4 months old when he enlisted for the Australian Imperial Forces on July 27th 1916. He was born in Port Adelaide but then moved to Broken Hill, New South Wales. Caldwell was a serving member in the 48th Battalion and trained in Egypt. Before the war he had previously worked as a laborer. He was married to Mrs Annie Caldwell and his mother was Mrs M Caldwell. His brother, David Wallace Caldwell, was a 2nd Lt (Lieutenant) which is the lowest Commissioned Officer rank. During Caldwell’s time in the Australian defence force Private Robert Caldwell committed a number of offences. Caldwell was absent from military parade without permission on 6/10/16 in England and was consequently stripped of five days pay. He was written down and striped of seven days pay for neglecting to obey orders on the 7/12/16 in France. One of the longest times Caldwell had been away was when he was absent without leave from 12noon on the 23/7/17 until 12 noon on the 24/7/17 because of this 14 days pay was taken from his total balance. Private Robert Vance Caldwell was finally discharged from the Australian defence force on the 18/8/19.
