From How We Served
1735 Private Frederick Hare of Salisbury, South Australia had been employed as a miner prior to his enlisting for War Service on the 18th of August 1915 and was allocated to reinforcements for the 32nd Battalion 1st AIF.
This had been Frederick’s second attempt to serve overseas with the 1st AIF, as stated on his attestation papers, he had already previously joined the 1st AIF but had been found medically unfit due to chronic alcoholism and had been discharged without having left Australia. On this his second attempt to serve with the 1st AIF Frederick was embarked for Egypt and further training on the 11th of January 1916 and following his arrival he was transferred over to the 48th Battalion on the 26th of April.
By the 19th of May, whilst awaiting being shipped to France, Frederick suffered a phycological breakdown and was admitted into the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital (Heliopolis) where it was diagnosed that Frederick was suffering from senility, and he was boarded as unfit for further service. It being decided that Frederick should be repatriated back to Australia as an invalid, he departed Egypt on the 10th of July 1916. Following his been returned to Australia, Frederick received his official discharge from the 1st AIF on the 4th of September 1916 and he was re-entered into civilian life.
Frederick’s premature death after having been discharged from the 1st AIF for mental illness occurred on the 19th of November 1930 at the age of 58. Following his passing Frederick was formally laid to rest within West Terrace Cemetery, South Australia.
