Three WW1 Australian Men who are buried in the UK died on this date.
Died on this date – 21st August……Private William James Fowell was born at Deniliquin, New South Wales. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 23rd February, 1916 as a 19 year old, single, Farmer from Narracan, Victoria.
Private Fowell embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 27th May, 1916 with the 10th Infantry Brigade, 39th Infantry Battalion, “A” Company & disembarked at Devonport, England on 18th July, 1916 where he would receive further training before being sent to the War Front.
Private Fowell was reported seriously ill with pneumonia on 16th August, 1916.
Private William James Fowell died on 21st August, 1916 of Measles & Bronchial Pneumonia at Brimstone Bottom Isolation Hospital, Tidworth, Wiltshire, England.
He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
