Sergeant Cecil Affleck Herbert Aspinall, 22nd Battalion, later appointed as Acting Company Sergeant Major, was discharged from the AIF on 16 March 1916 having been appointed as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps.

On the 30 January 1918 2 Lt. Aspinall was flying an Avro 504J with the 70 Training Squadron at Beaulieu in England when his aircraft hit a hut and overturned on forced landing after engine failure. Aspinall’s observer Corporal Rochfort Richard Connor (37) was killed in the accident. Aspinall was unhurt.

            His brother, Captain John Vincent Aspinall 11 Squadron RFC became an ace in the Royal Air Force, shooting down 6 enemy aircraft before he was killed in action in France 15 May 1918.
