Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 12th October 1917, Private James Frederick Hughes, referred to as Sono, 35th Battalion (Reg No-99), coal trimmer from Mary Street, Linwood, New South Wales, was Killed in Action during the 1st Battle of Passchendaele, Passchendaele Campaign, age 30.

Cause of death unknown.

Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 14th December 1886 to John (died 30.5.1913, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 55) from Hargrave Street, Carrington, N.S.W., and Margaret Hughes (died 28.8.1912, Wickham, N.S.W., age 52, mother of 1 boy, 6 girls) from Hargrave Street, Carrington, N.S.W., Sono enlisted on the 24th November 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.

Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (GSW left hand, Battle of Messines).

Admitted to hospital 15.9.1917 (trench fever).

Sono’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 23), Belgium.

Place of Association – Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr. Hughes’s name has also been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor, Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor and the Book of Gold.

Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription at the Hughes gravesite to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, so September 2017 I erected a Memorial cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of Sono’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-30. 29.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
