Victor Bradshaw - Service Number: 5799

Wow – what an interesting research for a man on the Moore WW1 Honour Board.
Victor Bradshaw was born in Fulham, London in 1891, the youngest of 14 children of William and Elizabeth Bradshaw. In 1901, 10 year old, Victor was living with his brother Charles at Adenby Rd, Fulham. His father died in 1904 and his mother 1927. It seems that his brother Charles adopted Victor per the 1921 census. Interesting as their mother was still alive!
Victor Bradshaw enlisted in the Royal Navy in Aug 1910 until Dec 1910. In Mar 1913 Victor boarded the steam ship Orsova bound for Brisbane. 1005 passengers in total and only 66v for Queensland! Victor gave his occupation as Factory Hand. He arrived at Brisbane on 29 Apr 1913.
Soon after Victor was living at Moore which is situated at the base of the Balfour Range between Esk in the Brisbane River valley and Yarraman in the South Burnett. He was working as a labourer when he enlisted in the Australian Infantry Services on 1st Jun 1916. He gave his brother Charles as his NOK living at 28 Garvan Rd, Fulham, London.
Victor was assigned to the 25th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement and his unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A36 Boonah on 21 October 1916. Victor served in France and like so many of the other young men he was hospitalised several times. 1917 – Sick, 1918 – septic Hand, 1918 – wounded in action, 1919 – Appendix.
Victor returned to Australia 22 December 1918 on-board the “Bakara” and discharged on 31 Mar 1919 and returned to live at Moore.
In 1920 Victor returned to the UK on-board the Euripides and travelled via Brisbane; Albany; Sydney; Melbourne; Fremantle; Durban; Cape Town; Tenerife; Plymouth, Devon, England. He married Esther Merry at St Andrews Church of England, Fulham on 27 Mar 1921 giving his address as 28 Garten Rd, Fulham.
The 1921 census shows Victor and Esther living at the same place with his “Adopted father/brother” Charles Bradshaw and his family. Victor contacted Australia House in London regarding his War Medals during 1921. He received 3 medals - 1914-15 Star, British war Medal and the Victory Medal, all issued in 1923.
By 1939 Victor and Esther and one of their 2 daughters were living at 7 Lymington Close, Mitcham, Surrey and Victor was a Street Pairing Mason.
Victor died in 1964 aged 72 and is buried at Herne Bay Cemetery. His wife joined him in 1981.
