Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.

61 years ago today, on the 27th February 1960, Sergeant Mark Ernest McGrath, Australian Army Veterinary Corps (Reg No-3887), university student from 14 View Street, Waverley, New South Wales and Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 69. CATHOLIC 3-82. 69.

Born at Braidwood, New South Wales on the 5th March 1890 to Mark Joseph and Annie McGrath; husband of Irene McGrath nee McCloskey (married 1921, Sydney, N.S.W., died 1959?), Mark enlisted August 1915 with the 2nd Battalion at Holsworthy, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 23.7.1916 (GSW right foot or thigh, severe), 6.11.1916 (GSW right foot, gassed), Mark was invalided home May 1919, being discharged on the 8th July 1919.

Mr McGrath’s name has been inscribed on the Milwood Public School First World War Honour Roll.

Mark’s headstone inscription gives us no indication of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label to honour his sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance, Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, N.S.W.
