Wilfred Cornelius was born in Adelaide and living in Willunga (where his father was a slate merchant) when he enlisted age nearly 33 years. A single man, he came from a large family and was the elder brother of Pte Henry Cornelius. His sister, Jennifer, was a member of the Willunga Cheer-up Society.
He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A73 Commonwealth on 2 November 1917 and served in Eygpt from 10 December 1917 until his departure on 30 August 1918. Wifred returned on 3 October 1918 and was discharged on 06 December having served 1 year and 287 days. AS recorded by the newspapers of the day, Wilfred received both a farewelland, later an enthusiastic welcome home from the Cheer-Up girls.
Wilfred was residing at Somerton Park whe he died on 19 May 1961, aged 77 years. He was buried in the RSL section of Centennial Park.
