Alfred was the third of four children of William (Billy) Edward Clare (b1862 in Lancashire, England) and Lavinia Wood (b1864 in Yorkshire, England). Billy (a Printer - Compositor) and Lavinia (a Worsted Drawer - in wool spinning) married in 1884 in Cheshire, England. The couple and two children arrived in Melbourne, Victoria in early 1890. The family then moved to Western Australia in 1892 and Billy prospected for gold in Coolgardie before establishing the Coolgardie Miner, In the early 1900s he was a Journalist in Cottesloe, Fremantle, then the family lived in Bunbury where Billy was a Journalist before returning to Perth by 1914.
Alfred worked as a Linotype Printer for his father and was in Cottesloe when he enlisted in the AIF in February 1916. Alfred served as a Private (Service No:488) with 44th Infantry Battalion and was WiA in France in August 1918 - GSW to his head. He was Discharged in August 1919.
Returning to the family home at Cottelsoe Beach in Fremantle, WA Alfred was a Linotype Printer in 1919 when he married Jane Annie Willey (b1895 in Bunbury WA) - Jane was a Dressmaker in Bunbury. Alfred and Jane settled in Perth WA where he was a Linotype Printer. Alfred died in 1957 and Jane in 1970.
