Son of George Hicks and Letticia Hicks of Hospital Hill, Dungog, NSW. Brother of George Sydney Hicks of the 27 NSW Reinforcements whose ship was recalled en route overseas due to war's end

At the time of enlistment his address was given as 'Windsor',  Bennett Street, Bondi, NSW

Commenced return to Australia on 28 January 1916 aboard HS Kanowna
