James was born in Townsville, son of James Spence and Elizabeth Davies.
Private Spence enlisted in Townsville on 1 Nov 1915 aged 21. He embarked from Sydney on 9 Apr 1916 per HMAT A71 “Nestor”, and served on the Western Front with the 4th Field Ambulance and the 1st Australian General Hospital.
He returned to Australia on 31 Oct 1917 and was discharged on 1 Feb 1918. He was a striker. He died 17 May 1961.
