Florence was born on 27 September 1889 at Mackay, Queensland to Irish Immigrant, James Barry, and Elizabeth Jane Gondon, who had immigrated from St. Helier, Jersery, Channel Islands. Florence had four siblings who survived into adulthood - three sisters who all became nurses, and one brother.

On 28 Jun 1904, at age 14 Flossie was admitted to Mackay Hospital with dyspepsia, and discharged on 4 July 1904.

Her appointment was terminated in the A.I.F. on 22 February 1920 with a Gastric Ulcer Disability.

A newspaper report in the Daily Mercury on 29 November 1934 about the early days of Coningsby, Queensland, states Flossie had married a man named Forrest, and was living in Rangoon, India at the time.
