James was the fouth born child to James and Rebecca Blakeley. James's older three siblings were born in Ireland while James and his younger four siblings were born in Scotland.

James migrated to Australia aboard the Makarini arriving in Melbourne in June 1913 with his parents and three siblings. Two older siblings arrived in 1912 while two siblings died in Scotland in infancy.

At the time James was killed in action, his older brother 441 Pte. William Thomas Blakeley (/explore/people/223261) was enroute from Melbourne to Plymouth before proceeding to the Western Front.
