In the year 1882, on October 31, Archibald William Shields was born to William McCollah Shields and Mary Jane Shields. Before he enlisted, he worked as a Labourer, then as a Salesman. On the 31st of May 1915, Archibald enlisted into the AIF. 

A year later, in 111th June 916, he embarked on active service abroad and proceeded to join the 2nd Australian Division in Ismailia as part of Miscellaneous Reinforcements. He was taken on strength with the 7th Field Ambulance 9th March 1916. On the 14th of March, he embarked from Alexandria and arrived in Marseilles 19th March. In July he was granted leave and rejoined his uni 20th July. He became unwell with jaundice the next month and spend some time in hospital followed by a convalescence depot. He returned to his unit 24th September 1917. 

During 1918 he took short amounts of leave in January and August and travelled to the UK. In March 1919 he travelled to the UK to prepare for return to Australia. He embarked from England on the ship "Nestor" arriving back 29th June 1919 and on 22nd August he was he was officially discharged from military service.
