Biography contributed by Peter Cates

Howard Clift grew up in Willunga as part of a family of eleven children. He was single and working as a farm Labourer at the time he enlisted, aged 25.

His unit arrived in France on 5 December 1916. He later suffered from scabies and also caught mumps, so was hospitalised. Rejoining his unit in March 1917, he was wounded in the left knee in October. In April 1918 he wasgassed and evacuated to England, not returning to the front until the end of September 1918.

Once back in Australia he was discharged medically unfit. After the war Howard lived at Loxton and Hamily Bridge. He married Ellen Letitia Millane (Letty) at Maitland on 24 September 1924 andthey had a son, James and daughter Mary.

Howard was living at Seaton Park when he died, aged 76 and is buried at Centennial Park along with his wife Letty who died in 1993.
